Kirov State Medical University boasts a rich history that began in 1987 when it opened as a branch of Perm State Medical University. In just three months, thanks to the efforts of the first rector V.A. Zhuravlev and vice-rector S.L. Sharigin, the institution was ready to welcome its first students. Starting with just two faculties – General Medicine and Pediatrics – KSMU has steadily grown and developed over the years.

Milestone

A key milestone came in 1993 when the first class graduated, paving the way for KSMU to become an independent institute a year later. By 1998, it had earned the prestigious status of an Academy. This period of growth saw the establishment of new faculties and departments, construction of dormitories and a modern academic building, and the opening of museums dedicated to the history of the Academy and Anatomy. The Academy also fostered strong relationships with hospitals and healthcare institutions, while actively pursuing scientific research. This dedication to excellence culminated in 2011 with the awarding of a termless license for educational activity.

Achievements

Recognition of KSMU's achievements continued in 2016 when it was ranked among the top 10 universities in Russia according to the Ministry of Education and Science. This achievement, along with the Academy's growing reputation, led to the Ministry of Healthcare granting KSMU university status in the same year.

KSMU has also embraced internationalization. Since 1995, it has welcomed foreign students, and by 2018, a dedicated Faculty of Foreign Students was established. Today, over 500 students from 39 countries call KSMU home.
